'Skilful Behavior' Flavour 2, Episode 8: Juan Diego Botto Breaks Down That Epic Episode, From That Phone Call To That Fight

Well, there [were] a lot of discussions nigh that scene, about that moment. This is a very heavy episode for my character emotionally because we take the scene at the beginning with the family, with the married couple —the woman that I impale — and so I take the phone call and and so I have the beating up Teo (Juan Riedinger) and so I have my brother. It'southward a very big, heavy, emotional episode for Javier. So knowing that, you don't want to give too much in just one thing. Considering when we were doing the phone phone call, afterward the telephone call, there's still a scrap of an uphill, and afterwards the scrap of an uphill is finding my brother. Then you don't want to requite everything on that scene. Information technology was trying to find the right balance, because information technology's one of those moments for my grapheme where he puts everything on the table. Well, the prop guy actually wasn't happy with that. That was a first impulse, and after I did that, I looked at the prop guy and he was like, "We don't accept another telephone. We didn't know y'all were going to practise that, I'thousand so sorry," he was like apologizing. I was like, "No no no, it's my bad, I didn't tell yous I was going to do that. I didn't even know I was going to do that." But information technology came every bit an impulse, it felt like the right thing to practice. And if y'all have been in conversations similar to that, you know, it'southward one of those things that yous really want to do. But then in that location'southward that other thing in the back of your head telling you, "This a very expensive phone, don't do it." But my character didn't have that stopping him, so I just went alee and did information technology. Only it was funny, now that you mention that, considering I remember clearly the confront of the prop guy.

Your character gets a bit violent in this episode, then I imagine that similar to some of the sex scenes on the testify, the fight scenes accept to exist pretty specifically choreographed. How do you lot and the other thespian establish that, the concrete trust, with each other?

Well, that'south something that you lot have to do. And you know that practice that people do in drama theater schools and sometimes in groups, when you just allow yourself get and the other one grabs you, and information technology'southward just a manner to show that you lot trust each other. That's what you lot gotta practise when you do things similar this and scenes like that. Fortunately, Juan, he was simply sometimes, even too much, like, "Just hit me. It'south fine, I don't care, you're allowed to!"

No, of course not. I would never. He was similar, "Yous tin can grab me, yous can," so it makes things like shooting fish in a barrel. Of form I didn't, I have a fighting coordinator to take care of that, only it's good when the other actor lets you know, "Hey, it'southward fine. We're only trying to do the all-time affair possible." It's pretty much the same with the sex scenes. You've got to choreograph, y'all've got to follow that, and it's like a dance. Fight scenes are pretty much the same. It'due south similar a dance, and you lot want to perform information technology as if you were living it for the first time but sticking to the movements that have been choreographed.

In the scene with the husband and the married woman, that'due south one of the more than intense missions that you lot've been on. Merely when the three of y'all as actors are sitting in this room, and this adult female is tied upwardly, do you make small talk in between takes?

Information technology was a tense scene. Now that I'm going back to information technology in my head, it was pretty silent. Information technology was pretty silent. When I was doing the scene, when I was actually killing the woman, I tend to exist very conscientious with those scenes, and I'm very enlightened that the other actor might feel uncomfortable, so I effort to stress, "Is everything fine? Am I pulling you too difficult? If there's annihilation that makes you feel uncomfortable, just allow me know." Some actors can feel very— specially [those in] i scene in a evidence that's on the second season, everybody knows each other, y'all just go at that place for one twenty-four hour period and in that location's a guy tying you lot up and killing y'all brutally. So that might be uncomfortable. I just tried to brand her feel comfortable. But other than that, during the whole violence scene it was very silent. Did you feel as an player but heavier after this episode? Did you experience that you had to decompress, and how did yous do that later on going through such intense scenes?

I would love to say that I don't demand to do that, that I just go in and out of my character with no problem, just I would be lying. I actually did, it was intense for me, and sometimes you need to — yeah, exactly, decompress. I remember talking to Michelle while we were doing the final episode, and we kind of have that thing when you're doing an episode or a scene that's very intense, you take to weep a lot, that after the second or the third day, you go, "I experience sad and I don't know why." Well, the why is because you've been crying for the last two, iii days, doing scenes that put you in a very emotional place. And even though it'southward fake and it's fiction and information technology'due south make-believe and it's your chore, the body doesn't know that. Sometimes you lot just need to accept a suspension and talk to your daughter and laugh and take fun and forget nearly the scenes.

Your graphic symbol and Michelle's character spend a few episodes physically apart this season. Is it fun to have a break from her and so re-energize yous when you guys are dorsum together?

Yep. And at first it feels kind of weird because we go used to seeing each other every twenty-four hour period on gear up, and it's foreign to spend a few days doing scenes with other people. But the good thing is that when yous get back together, it's like, "Hey I missed you! Here we are again." And so yeah, it'due south fun.

Did y'all feel like you were missing out at all in this episode? Because you didn't become to go to that spray pigment political party, and y'all didn't get to run around in the woods like she did.

Yeah, I don't regret that.

Me personally? Yeah, I do. [laughs] Well, you know, I alive in Madrid, and in every coffee store that yous go in, if you ask for a coffee, they give you an espresso. That's what java means. Do you have an espresso motorcar when you come up here to the States to shoot?

Yes. I really similar coffee.
